Ankara, this is something the ladies would absolutely love, as they never cease the opportunity to “pepper” us on the social media every weekend at their different functions. But this word literally gave me a headache last week. I had my friend come over and we were discussing about different things. Suddenly I showed a picture on my cell phone with nice inspiring designs, and he was like “no oh, these aren’t Ankara now, these are materials.” So it led me to thinking.
What is an Ankara? Ankara was formerly known as Dutch wax print. Originally manufactured for the Indonesian textile market, by the Dutch. But these lovely prints got a lot of interest in West Africa than Indonesia. Seizing this opportunity, the Dutch decided to focus on West Africa. As such, the prints changed to reflect African culture and lifestyle more. African print henceforth emerged.
This same word is also the name of the capital of a country “Turkey”, so don’t get it twisted if you do see it on CNN. So today, we would be looking at different styles of rocking our beloved African print or better known as Ankara. These prints have been styled in different ways for; formal, classy, casual and interesting looks. Ladies get in here please, and grab some popcorn while at it. These are some stylish ways to recreate yourself in an Ankara material and look truly African i.e. Black and Beautiful.
