Our Favourite Wonderland Characters Just Got Human Faces

In the past couple years, we’ve experienced different variations of the remake of some of our favorite cartoons. It’s almost like all our favorite cartoons are getting an adult make over, think Beauty and The Beast, Jungle Book, Maleficent, Snow White and the Huntsman the list goes on.

Well, one of the newest addition is the remake of Alice in Wonderland. While the others have been movie based, this is being remade into a calendar, The Pirelli 2018 Calendar.

The Pirelli calendar has always being known for it’s very tantalising images showcasing women in the most sensual and evocative ways. This year however, the images have taken a whole new direction and we love it . Photographed by Tim Walker, an award winning photographer who has entranced the readers of Vogue for over a decade and styled by (British) Vogue’s Editor in Chief, Edward Enninful, the Alice in Wonderland story is being told in a completely different way.

As opposed to a white cast which is what comes to mind when people think of Alice in Wonderland, the calendar showcases a full cast with black people with big names like Djimon Hounsou, Lupita Nyong’o, Whoopi Goldberg,  Sean Combs (P Diddy) and Naomi Campbell and others like Jaha Dukureh, Duckie Thot, Thando Hopa, RuPaul, Wilson Oryema, Zoe Bedeaux and King Owusu

Thando and Whoopi Goldberg as the Princess of Hearts and the Royal Duchess

Why we love this; it’s important that young children see black people being represented in the fantasy genre. They can see and think of themselves as dolls, happy and beautiful.

Would this end the racial discrimination in the world? No, but it’s a step in ensuring black people aren’t neglected.
